John Sam - Founder & Trainer

Dogs have always been part of John’s life. From early days training at local dog clubs, he has always been drawn to understanding dogs better and helping them succeed.

Before dog training became his profession, John worked in IT and holds a Master’s Degree in Information Technology. In 2016, everything shifted when he discovered Nose Work — initially as a way to support his own reactive Labrador. The change he saw was powerful: increased confidence, reduced stress, and a stronger partnership between dog and handler. That experience changed the course of his career.

In 2017, John founded Canberra Nosework Training and began working professionally with dogs. What drives him most is seeing shy, fearful, or reactive dogs grow in confidence through scent work — watching them learn, problem-solve, and realise they can succeed.

John has competed nationally with several Labradors, earning multiple ACSW titles and placements, including Overall Partnership awards that recognise exceptional teamwork. While these achievements matter, for John the true reward is the relationship built through trust, communication, and understanding.

John continues to learn and give back to the dog community. He has volunteered with local dog clubs, the RSPCA-ACT, and at scent work trials, supported K9 Nose Work camps in the USA, and is one of the first eight Certified Nose Work Instructors in Australia.

He is also a qualified Canine Behaviour Practitioner, an ANKC Foundation Scent Work Judge, and a proud member of the Pet Professional Guild Australia — committed to force-free, ethical, science-based training.

At the heart of John’s work is a simple belief: every dog deserves to feel safe, capable, and confident — and Nose Work can help them get there.
